Opacity Monitors

Environmental Monitor Service designs and manufactures opacity monitors used to measure the amount of particulate effluent that is being released into the atmosphere by combustion.

Environmental Monitor Service (EMS) is a highly recognized leader in the design of opacity monitors, having been founded by some of the same people who started Dynatron - later to be acquired by Lear Siegler - many years ago. EMS units can be tailored to meet the requirements of various environmental regulations, and standard models are available to meet the automatic shut down requirements of New York City and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s PS-1 opacity specifications including zero/span calibration techniques.

How Opacity Monitors Work

Particles passing through the light beam are measured by detecting the variations in light transmittance. As the density of the effluent increases, a greater percentage of the light transmitted by the source is scattered or absorbed by the effluent. The intensity of the light incident on the photo detector is reduced. The output signal of the photo detector is directly related to the effluent transmittance. The signal is sent to the control unit for processing.

EMS Models

EMS currently offers two models that can be configured to meet your special needs:

1302OPLC. The 1302 features TTL alignment, a multiple lens condenser optical system to assure beam uniformity, a double pass measurement system for high sensitivity and a solid state light modulation system to eliminate ambient light interference. It is used for Title V compliance, precipitator efficiency control and any other application which demands accuracy and on-line zero/span calibration abilities. The 1302 features an on-line zero check mechanism, an on-line span check capability, digital indication and automatic lamp aging compensation.

1304. The top of the line 1304 is used for EPA compliant applications where automatic calibration cycles are mandated. In addition to many of the features outlined above, the 1304 also features adjustable early warning and alarm ranges, remote calibration initiation, a microprocessor based signal converter/display as well as a 6 minute averaging output.

In addition, EMS also manufactures the following products:

- Oxygen Monitors
- Opacity Audit (on-line) Test Systems
- Opacity Neutral Density Filters
